To “join” the Club a child opens a savings account with a $10 deposit. The Bank gives incentives to encourage saving: prizes with every deposit of $5 or more and the Saver of the Month drawing which kids enter with every deposit made. Getting into the habit of saving money in a bank savings account at an early age correlates with going to college and having good spending habits as an adult!
The Million Dollar Kids Club also reaches out to the entire community through our Kids Club Events. Over the years we’ve hosted Winter Sledding and S’mores, Picnics in the Park, Movie Nights, Halloween Parties, and a Christmas Sing-a-Long. The tradition continues with our annual Pre-Parade Christmas Party held before the Hibbing High School Student Council’s Unity Parade at the beginning of December. The party includes entertainment, games and prizes, pizza, and a visit with Santa and Mrs. Claus! One of the biggest events in our spacious lobby is an educational evening with the Duluth Zoo Mobile. In the spring we have “critters” from the zoo here in the bank and an age-appropriate lesson from the zoo’s educator. Kids get to ask questions, touch the critters and have a chance to take home their own stuffed critter when they enter their name in a drawing!
But the Club doesn’t expect everyone to come to us…we’re happy to go to them! An educator from the bank goes into the schools to teach lessons during the American Bankers Association “Teach Children to Save” and “Get Smart About Credit” campaigns. We currently speak to 1st graders, 4th graders, and high school students in 11th and 12th grade. Another educational avenue is our participation in the Hibbing Academically Talented (H.A.T.) program. HAT is targeted to small groups of students that can handle more challenging education. Our class, “Making ‘Cents’ of Money,” uses age-appropriate lessons, fun projects, and games to explore money as a resource, attitudes about money, needs and wants, budgeting, saving, the principles of banking, credit, the nuts and bolts of money, counterfeiting, and sharing our resources.
