We began our Centennial Year with a calendar commemorating “Old Hibbing” through Aubin Photographs. These included photos such as the original Security State Bank circa 1915, toboggan sledding on First Avenue circa 1918, Hibbing City Hall circa 1920, President Coolidge’s visit to Hibbing circa 1925, and a 4th of July Parade down Howard Street circa 1930. The calendar was a big hit with customers and community members alike who enjoyed reminiscing over familiar scenes!
February 9, 2011 marked Security State Bank’s 100 year birthday. We celebrated with Centennial Celebrations throughout the year. On February 11th an exclusive group of Board Members, employees, former employees, and customers met to celebrate the Centennial during an evening open house. The entertainment included a solo pianist, a slide show of bank photographs collected since the 1960’s and bank memorabilia including ledger books from 1911, past Bank President portraits, a 1918 Meilieke Calculator and a 1926 Brandt Automatic Cashier, historical newspaper clippings about the Bank, and 1911 newspapers.
Our second celebration included the entire community for a Parking Lot Extravaganza on July 6th. The afternoon included a complimentary lunch, popcorn and old fashioned Root Beer. Children and adults were entertained with a Moonwalk, Sawdust Pile (finding hidden coins), Chuck Perry and his Balloon Sculptures, and a live broadcast of WTBX radio station. The BIG draw to this celebration was the Dunk Tank! Bank President Pat Gates, Senior Commercial Lender Mark Gardeski, and Board Member and owner of Jasper Engineering Tom Jamar headed the list of “dunkables.” A few brave Bank Kids (children of employees) sat in when the adults were too cold or sore! The Dunk Tank raised money for the Hibbing Food Shelf and provided entertainment for everyone. The community had the opportunity to walk away with great prizes like tickets to Valley Fair (compliments of WTBX), and a weekend stay at the Cotton Mansion in Duluth (compliments of Security State Bank). Everyone went home with a great cooler tote commemorating the bank’s 100 years.
Our Big Blue pig float was the center of attention (ours at least!) during Hibbing’s Jubilee Parade in July. Big Blue wore his 100 Year Birthday Hat and wowed the crowds lining the streets of downtown Hibbing with his “blue-ness.”
A “Business –After-Hours” celebrated the Centennial in October. Hibbing Area Chamber members were invited to an open house in the Bank’s spacious lobby. The evening included food, beverages, door prizes, and a great networking opportunity as we began the fall season and the soon-to-be end of our 100th year.
December 1st was our last event of the Bank’s Centennial Year. We went out in style with our annual Million Dollar Kids Club Christmas Party. The Party is a precursor to the Hibbing High School Student Council’s Unity Parade. We celebrated with games and prizes, a visit from Santa and Mrs. Claus, Christmas cookie decorating (and eating!), and the unique songs and stories of Casey Aro. After the party kids and their families headed out to Howard Street to watch the parade…and headed home with “visions of sugar plums dancing in their heads”…or was that “visions of Big Blue all lit up?!”
